Took the engine out at the weekend...

Post by madjak »

Finally got the time to get back into the van again. The clutch judder has been coming and going so decided to pull the engine and gearbox and take a look.

Anyway, the clutch looks new, the spigot bearing was not just worn but smashed to bits and laying in the bottom of the bearing housing. I know there should be some slop in the input shaft but wouldn't be suprised if it's done the bearings in there as well.

Quick question though, I have no timing marks on my flywheel, can see nothing at all. Don't know how common this is but as for as getting TDC for the cambelt change is it just a case of pulling the No.1 injector and getting a dial gauge on it to get TDC, or am I missing something obvious?

Anyway its good to get the engine out and get a bit closer to getting it all back to full health again, needs to be in working order as its going to Belgium in june

timing marks are on clutch cover
do a gearbox oil change that'll show if there's any obvious damage, can wear the oil thrower and seal when spigot bearing goes, might be worth pulling the bellhousing off

Looks like the flywheels been changed and is blank without any TDC markings.

Ok, was going to do a gearbox oil change so will have a close look at what comes out. Will pull the bell housing as well for a quick look.

I'm pretty sure on a diesel there are no marks on the flywheel, it can only fit the engine in one position so the timing mark is on the cover of the clutch pressure plate big f o metal arrow point or tang

Took the clutch off and put it in corner when I took the engine out. Did have a look at it but nothing stood out with it laid on the floor.

Just been for a quick look and there is a notch cut into it in the right place.

Thanks very much for this, not had much to do with diesels before so on a major learning curve.

Have a quick pic incase some one else needs this;

The timing mark is the V cut into the pressure plate.
