Windscreen rubber
Need some advice on new windscreen rubber. We have leaky footwells etc. it is time to get the glass out and see how the metal is.
I imagine I do not want to put the old rubber back as it leaks, so I need advice on finding a new one. I can get them from JustKampers, but it is a repro part, and the wiki here says it is harder to get in. I cannot find a VW one however.
any pointers much appreciated!

Hi, we use the window seal from Alan Schofield and have had no problems.

Re: Windscreen rubber
JK ones not only hard to get in, they're just plain wrong and stand out a mile. They don't fully seal properly either/ Frankly, they have a cheek even describing them as suitable. They're awful.

Re: Windscreen rubber
OK, to conclude the story, I got a new rubber from Günzl, we ground out all the rust, welded the holes, ground it back, primer, new paint, put the windscreen back in.
and in the first heavy rain, water in the bottom edge. It seems to simply not be a great design.
I have put roofing mastic under the top edge, suddenly no problem ...

Re: Windscreen rubber
You squeeze roofing mastic in all round. Also, remember that it can take a while for the rubber to settle in.

Re: Windscreen rubber
Would echo that. Absolutely no point in fitting poor copies, particularly when in theory, it will prob be the last time the job has to be done. 1664 and I recently swapped his el-crappo JK one for a decent one. That said, I still think the mastic is a good idea. VW did not use any to my knowledge but that may be why so many screens have rotted lips now. Its just one extra barrier to moisture.

Re: Windscreen rubber
well i suppose thats a ppoint, certainly the pliability of the oe rubber helps it fit to the profile , one of the good reasons for making screen aperature repairs to match the original.
there is a non setting black sealant that is used in this application , but if applying prior to fit then be prepared to sling your fitting cord and if this stuff gets on any porous fabric it stays there,
you could apply afterwards but run the risk of damaging the paintwork ,

Re: Windscreen rubber
I bought OEM front and rear seals from Status VW when they used to be located nr Kirby Lonsdale
If I was buying them again the ONLY placeI would consider is http://www.volkswagenemporium.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for original seals

Re: Windscreen rubber
I would have thought, at that price, it would be an original or a very good copy. With an original you can do it single-handed - with care. Use a cheap copy and you'll need four blokes leaning on the glass to even make progress. Its certainly tempting to look at prices when making such purchases but this is one of those items where any savings are completely wiped out by all the fitting hassle.

Re: Windscreen rubber
its hard unless youve done a few to recognise a copy that is as good as useless from one that will fit. as said they just drop in, fit the correct one and return this??

Re: Windscreen rubber
Yeah to be honest I thought it would of been an Oem part! I put it in boiling water for 20 mins, put it on glasses, fitted the string, then tried to put it into tailgate, get the corner in hurray, get the opposite corner in hurray, oh wait the other corner has popped out! And so on and so fourth!!! Now it's kinda in except for one corner that's almost in, total crap 2 pretty strong guys pushing on it and still won't go on.
