Glad you agree...what do you class as a "proper oil"? I have swapped to 0/30 in the AAZ due on the cool running...seems to be holding together so far....thin as wee wee...

Im a fan of Castrol Magnatec 10W40 for petrols or Castrol Edge 5W40 for diesels. Im a fan of Castrol products and have been since my single seater race days cuz it was the only oil that would hack it in very hot engines having the nuts driven out of them. We all used it eventually! No other reason.
0W30 would be as thin as wee wee and I like your thinking on it.

I think the coolant stat thing was just people going off on a tangent wasn't it?..

Generally they seem to support the conclusion that water to air cooling is more effective. For my purposes though one of the things I THINK Andrew A Libby's analysis is suggesting is that the big hole I cut in the tray at the base to get the air out might be having the opposite effect and it's better to vent to rear of van where there's negative pressure!! Bugger! It might be worth looking into that a bit more if u were considering cutting holes syncropaddy...
Bernd Jaeger's intercoolers are also about twice the area of mine, which is bound to help (900Euro though?)

I believe all you will need to do is to add a duct and vent to the rear. Ive been thinking a lot about the ducting/airflow and I know that if I get the shape of the ducting right, the air will be 'sucked' out the back and the faster the van goes the greater the 'suck' will be out the back. The greater the 'suck' the greater the airflow over the intercooler and this is what is needed.

I think you're right yeah - the venting on thatsamba thread was interesting but seemed a bit over the top to me considering that there's a massive gap between exhaust and rear valance anyway - I'm thinking about a simple duct dropping from the hole and emerging under rear bumper, maybe made out of thick gasket rubber to protect it from debris and stuff. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Interesting thoughts from Mr Baxter - know what you mean about cutting big holes though - they do have a tendency to look kinda "pooh" and need welding back up again if the plans are not too successful

i am completely 50/50 about this subject and just cant decide.
if i go intercooler, i will probably have to chop the van about a bit, but now is a good time with the engine and box out.
If i dont want to chop the van , and for the fact the unit itself can be place practically anywhere, then chargecooler is sounding quite tempting.
that on the other hand has more bits to go wrong and yet another load of water pipe junctions to add to the woes of a relative newbie in the watercooled world.
ebay does seem to have an interesting choice of parts though with some ridiculously cheap units http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/UNIVERSAL-LIQ ... 1e7a86230d
and some landrover ones, the idea of which might be applicable to a vw tdi for someone with aly welding skills...
