Power Steering Kits

Hi,
Anyone had experience of these power assisted steering kits.

I know Busman have them on their website but i'm interested in adding one to my Caravelle syncro. If anyone has fitted such a system or has driven a syncro with one i'd be very interested to get some feedback.

i have eps on mine and love it. some dont like the idea. for a syncro i`d possibly think about haveing an internal speed sensor rather than an external one that could get full of mud.

I think It might have a sensor that goes on the rear inner cv joint area that can be knocked off quite easy. I might be wrong though, but it wouldn't be a problem on a road car.

Had one, used it on a 2wd, took it off and sold it. Works fine but doesn't address the wheel-twirling that you still get from the 4.25 turn lock-to-lock of a manual rack. Factory PAS is 3.75 turns, may not sound a lot but it's significant IME.

Thanks for the heads up on the speed sensor location. I'm still thinking about the possibility of fitting one as i have had power steering on all my other syncros and it makes a difference when its a regular and often daily drive like my new Caravelle will end up being.
Lee; i'm interested in where you sourced your EPS from and did you install yourself or leave that to the suppliers?

If i can muster the cash then its going to be installed at some point in June.

Would any CV protection help with protecting that speed sensor???

I fitted the Ultimate system, fairly straightforward. I cannot see why you cannot make protection for the speed sensor. It would be possible to make a gearbox to run it off the speedometer cable if you are really worried.

No reason why you can't knock the reluctor ring onto the front CV joint for the road speed sensor on a syncro, no need for all that extra wire running it all the way to the back.
Reluctor ring simply knocks over the joint, it's only a iron ring read by a ABS sensor, they can be pretty dirty anyway, I wouldn't worry about mud so long as it isn't magnetic!

You could do it on the outer cv in the swinging arm possibly

i plan on inquiring about the pulse requirement for the eps system. atm we have a adjustable switch inside the cab that you adjust to suit. i`m hoping the pulse requirement for the tdi cruise controll is the same as needed for the eps, if so speed sensitive system could be done fully internally from the back of the clock. should have the info available in a few decades if all goes well.

I had thought about using the gear linkage to simply switch the EPAS off in 3rd/4th, using a big fat relay and a proximity switch on the gear lever box. A bit crude I know but PAS is only needed at low speeds, probably wouldn't notice it as you go across the gate to & from 3rd gear, what with weight transfer and the dip in acceleration as you change gear?
