Tapping metalic engine noise
Engine 2.1 DF. Oil changed (and flushed 300 miles
ago)
I have read through the post previously on this but
would like to know some thoughts on my problem
Drove to cornwall 180 miles no problems. Next day
no problems on a short journey to beach. Second day
engine sounds like a bunch of spanners banging
around. Drove 1.5 miles to beach. My hearing may
not be the best but it sounds like it is coming from
near side of engine maybe cyclinder head, maybe
closer to crank case. The noise is very metalic. Have
taken the head covers off nil of note. The RAC have
just relayed me home.. with no advice and i need the
van very soon, inlaws need to be picked up from
airport. What do you r econ it is.. any advice on fault
finding. I have recorded the noise but have no clues
on how to post it.

i am not sure what the tappet noise sounds like
Dreadful, loud, like a metallic tapping, it'll probably go away after a few miles. Another description might be like a Mac trying to do a PC's work

I am sure it is a df (i presume that means digifant) it is a 2.1 whitestar, born feb 1990, import from germany. it has definatelly got injection rather than carb. I will ask the garage what oil they used to make sure its viscocity is correct.
If i do a trip will i ruin the engine, and how far should i drive?.. should i open up the clearence to try to purge the air?
Oh and shouldn't it be the noise a PC makes when trying to compete with a Mac... Mac's rule

Nope wont be a DF, it will either be a DJ or an MV (Could be an SS but not likely).. DF was a a low power 1.9.. MV/SS used digifant with lambda probe and cat.. IIRC. DJ used Digijet without lambda probe.
If it is the tappet then it will clear after a little run.. but it wont sound pleasant.. just dont thrash it.
if the engine is very healthy, then a 10w40 might be ok.. but VW always spec'd 15w40 as a min unless in cold climates, filling with a 20w50 will normally clear a rattly tappet on a tired engine!
