JX 1.6 Turbo Diesel hole in injector rail. HELP!!

Post by ibsey »

Hi

I have just discovered that there is a pin prick of a hole in one of the injector rails spraying into the engine bay. Apprently I can no longer get the part, not even from Germany (stopped doing them in 2009) according to VW Heritage.

Does anyone have experience of this and/or a solution please. I have been told its possible to have it braze repaired. Currently waiting for Volks magic to get back to see if they have a second hand one.

Also who might be good to do the work in Essex?

I would appreciate any help.

Shane

Why did the original get holed - are the anti vibration plastic clips on the pipes? There are 3.

The pin hole on mine was on the outside of a bend [stress?] no 1 pipe ,both clips fitted by me,one was missing when i got the van.
I had mine brazed in Eire for 12euro i also bought a replacement from VW [the only one they had] for about the same price,it was dated 1992 same year as my van!!what luck!.

I will check that out thanks. But it was in a place where it did not look as if it rubbed anything. It was on the straight piece just before going into the engine beside the rubber looped pipes. (you have probably guessed i dont know any of the correct technichel words)

I had exactly the same issue as you. Bought the Brickwerks ones and fitted my self. its tight in places, but if you have the right spanners i wouldnt bother with the garage. leave one end semi tight to bleed with a quick turn of the engine- to man job- and tighten to try to prevent airlocks.

This is a very common issue and one that baffles me a little. Short supported pipes with stress fracture related failure. No corrosion or impact damage, you just wouldn't think that this could happen but it does regularly.
Thankfully good ole Brickwerks to the rescue.
Definitely worth replacing the set because if one has gone then the others may not be far behind.

The trouble there is two large lumps of metal (block and pump) with four hard metal pipes in between, there is going to be two different resonations due to the differing masses and it appears to be the luck of the draw as to whether or not your pipes receive too much stress. Modern manufacturing should be able to provide a more flexible alternative? Modern diesels are so much more smoother running that, presumably, they don't suffer from it to the same extent. My step father's diesel Jag is so smooth that you can forget that it is running.
It would be interesting to measure the amount of movement there.A job for when I am next in the engine bay. :idea

Indeed. The improvements in diesel fuel injection systems 'Common rail' ultra high pressure systems with electronically operated injectors, is widely regarded as one of the most significant advancements in motor vehicle technology over the last 10 - 12 years. These systems have simply revolutionised diesel engine design.
With fuel pressures held at and above 29,000 PSI allowing for multi staged and variable injection delivery, mapped and controlled via the ECU for any given condition. Fantastic stuff.
