Spot on. So it was leaking oil when you bought it. Did you ask the seller to explain where it was leaking from as it must have been dripping oil when you checked it underneath? Did it leak more after your test drive? Also how much is it leaking and from where?

Bought a dream...
The dream never leaked oil
Now, this is where the dream could end with massive garage bills.. .. or you learn a little about VW and why we love to maintain them, they are called Volkswagen for a reason (peoples car)
not Mechanikerwagen
We can help here if you want to fall deeper in love with your VW....or you can google VW specialist help in your area, and ask here if anyone knows them
best of luck

How bad is the leak and where is it coming from?
Our Doris has a few leaks, the main oil seal at the back and a little from the push rods... But hey Ho she is 30 and probably needs new seals! She's maybe lost half a litre in 400 to 500 miles of driving but I'm keeping her topped up and simply keeping a close eye on everything. We want to enjoy her for the summer season ( she's our first ever camper and we only bought her in January) and then I'm planning on getting that pesky main seal sorted out.
It's not uncommon for the engine to leak oil, a small leak can look far worse than it actually is.
Obviously if its wee weeing out all over the place like an oil slick something needs fixing right away

Thanks for replies folks...
He's a 1980 Aircooled Devon Convertion with a 2 litre engine (Dillon). There was no oil when I viewed him nor on the drive were the van was kept. I took a man who knew about vans and he checked it. However, I had to run him home which was about an hour and half. I did a steady 55 and just chilled, the engine purrs and there are no funny smoke colours coming out of the engine which I believe is a good sign - its also pretty clean on top oily when I look under. There are two EMPI (?) things underneath (Rocer covers?) and there is a pipe which when I turn him over oil comes out of a bit - this looks like its made out of a hose pipe! there are two plates and what seems to look like a flat tank - the oil seems to be running down the sides of this. there is an empi thing on the top left when you look in the engine bay too. I pulled up on the drive and there are drips but then a patch about the sixe if a 6" vinyl record but the drips stopped when it cooled.
Look forward to your reply,
Vikki

Could do with some pics but it sounds like the rocker covers and possible the pushrod tube seals are leaking and running over the tinware (flat bits you referred to). Are those flat bits black, not with oil but with paint?

Re: Bought Devon conversion T25 yesterday - please help...
without seeing it i guarantee it will be the rocker covers empi rocker covers are crap buy 2 standard steel ones and 2 new gaskets , and when refitting stick the new gaskets to the rocker covers with hylamar so they dont move upwards when refitting the covers
