Over cooked

I think I'm in a world of trouble.iv got a 1.9 petrol t25 last week i changed the clutch slave cylinder and to do so i removed the hose from the thermostat housing to gain better accses.i also knocked off the sensor for the thermo gauge.anyway like an idiot forgot to full it back up with water and went of on my travels.anyway because the thermo gauge wasn't working i had no idea it was over heating untill steam was bellowing in the van.so I pulled over immediately and realised i forgot to fill her up with coolant.seemed ok when I bled it off but 24hrs later iv got a leak from the head on the right hand side.i used some rad seal which sorted it yesterday while me and the fam were out and about.but I checked this morning and there's water underneath again.im sick with worry.iv only had it a few months and put 13 moth mot on her on Friday.can anyone tell me what going on.

It sounds like you've buggered it tbh

They need coolant to work like any other motor.

It sounds like the rubber head seal has given in to the temperature.

It looks to be head off time.

I've just taken off the metal plate under the rocker to reveal the pushrod tubes and the rubber seal seems new.but there's no sign of wet under it.

What you have got to do is fillit with water ( don't waste coolant at this stage) and get under it and look where it is leaking from...
It will always drip down under the heads , but might not be coming from the heads.....

Its full at the min.it doesn't seem to of dropped the level of the tank.its only a tiny droplet.but everywhere on the head seems dry.the rubber seal looks new and there's no sign of water anywhere.buy it was dropping off the case that protects the pushrod tubes.im very confused at the min.

So its now dry there?

As mocki says refill and run it up to see where its actually leaking from and perhaps then we can help.

It left a small pool on my drive this morning and noticed it dripping off the protective plate.but iv removed it and the head and gasket is dry.k just do t get it.

The low level light should still have been flashing away like mad ......

The comforting thing is that it's only a grand you may have blown away

The red level light wasnt flashing.probably because the sensor for the temperature gauge wasnt attached.if its gonna cost a grand to fix it then where the comfort in that.the cylinder head is compleatly dry and no signs of leaks.

The sensor for the coolant level is on top of the header tank in the engine bay, the temp sender wire being off would have stoped the guage working and possible the temperature warning light but not thye level LED.

The Grand is for a recon unit IF you've toasted the engine in your neglect

It still runs and drives fine with no knocking.i though it was a split seal or cracked head because that's where the water was dripping from.buy after taking of that protective plate and seeing no water actuall on the head tells me it might be leaking from somewhere else but running off the head as its escape route.i feel terrible for forgetting water but my head was so wrapped up in this slave cylinder and clutch pipe i forgot all about it.

So ... nearside or offside head ? Nearside it may have come from the t/stat housing ?

Yes mate.sorry its 1990 petrol water cooled.i will fill in those details after work.im on my fone at the min.the head is the offside one which is why j find it confusing as there is less water pipe over that end.im sorry if I'm making it hard for you.iv only had it for a month and am new to the vw scene

There is the 'S' hose from the o/s head to the distribution tower on the forward side of the engine bay ... check that.
