front jackng points

Post by acw »

Well tonight's little job was to touch up some rust on the wheels.
started by attempting to jack upthe front drivers side as soon as any pressure came on the jacking point the pristine sill just above the jack crunched then collapsed out onto the floor. quick poke with my finger easily loosened more material with the strength of a cream cracker.
Question is how much to fix? tens - hundreds - thousands

had a look at the wiki and it looks difficult and expensive, can it be done at home

thanks for the advice

Sorry didn't know formal introductions were required.

Name Andy
van 1982 T25 autosleeper, 2l air cooled engine some good metal but too much rust for my liking
owned for 3 weeks.
so far replaced the fuel hose as it was leaking and stopping the engine from starting, fixed the rear speakers wiring, fixed the sliding door, replaced the tiny golf steering wheel with a T25 one off gumtree.
interior looks ok but every time i look behind something i realise it has been wet at some point.
exterior has the normal signs of rust, not too bad until you look close. lifted the drivers floor mat only to find a small hole.
lots more questions but the big problem for now is the jacking points

Hi Andy

Welcome not so much a formal introduction as a friendly one :D and folks here will be happy to help in my experience but from what you're describing it sounds like an inner sill renewal

Hi
Thanks, post a pic tommorow when there is some light.
area was apparently perfect until i put the jack in an applied some pressure then crunch and a 3" square bit of the sill fell out.

OOOh I had this recently and on cutting back the outer B post skin and inner wheelarch cover panel could see properly and access the various layers of the area to cut out and fabricate/weld back in. Took me best part of 8 hours id say. Look at some of MMs posts on previous restorations- I always reckon that if you aim to do it that well then getting 50% there might just be nearly good enough. You can see from your photo that the B post inner stiffener/support (with a hole in it) appeasr to have come away so no load strength would be bearable hence collapse imho. Good luck, its all possible.

ooooooooooo, well its like this, if you hadnt have jacked it then you could have left it for a few years i reckon, but its done.
the outer sill/lower fridge panal and the seam between the 2 are both rotten and filled, the lower B post is shot as thats disintegrated, the heavy vertical support that carries most of the jp load up the inner side of the B post has rotted away, consider that this is 3-4mm thick,
the inner sill under the jp, well it sort of forms part of it is rotten ,if you were to take a hammer to it and a hammer will be taken to it in the course of cutting bad out to repair,
have you got access to the inside? cos you really will need it, have a look at the sunnyvagon, ok here i did a full inner sill but the pertinent part will show you the exact construction method and what should be there and is near enough like yours except i think your may be a touch worse  in so far as the heavy support has perished so imagine what the rest is like,
its a can of worms that you need to know how far to go to sort this part and where to stop, but it will need cutting open and doing correctly thats for sure
sorry, and sorry thats the best i can do with the picks available

, Thanks for the advice
i didn't think it would be easy, time for a look inside behind the fridge/sink unit.
i would guess that a leak from the sink or the window above has kept that area damp for a long time.

TBH better i found out now that it was shot than 100 miles from home with a flat.
