Rad fan
Help this has done my head in, I have never heard my fan come on in years of owning my van 1.9 aef engine! I thought I'd have a go today, so it has the green 3 pin 2 speed version, tried using wire from the mid pin of the connector to the outer ones nothing. I then used a spare batt to the fan directly and it worked, so motor is ok. I then looked at the back of the fuse box relay clicks as it should, cleaned earths, put new connectors on. Went to do the connector test as per the wiki and nothing!!!! What am missing

Re: Rad fan
If you connected the fan directly to a power source and it worked... then it clearly suggests there's an issue with the switch or it's connections

Re: Rad fan
Looks like you have a wiring problem. The red/white wire to the fan switch should be 12v live all the time. Bridge it to the red black wire the fan should run at low speed, recheck you still have 12v power at the red/white wire when you bridge it if it disappears then you have a poor connection at fuse 1 or in the red/white wire to the fan switch. Or the earth for the fan itself.

Re: Rad fan
Have a look here as you sound like you have similar problem.

I've just looked at what the wiki says for this and I think its confusing or perhaps wrong. The centre pin is not always the red/white 12v feed - the wiring diagram I checked shows it as pin 3 and I just checked on my van and it is one of the outer ones. So where it says bridge the centre pin to those on either side, bridge the red/white to the other two.
It was a bit difficult seeing the wiring colours on mine behind all the road grime/overspray etc but if you have a meter check all three to see if you have 12V on any and that should tell you which is the red/white (or more likely that you are not getting 12V like in the other thread)

Re: Rad fan
Right found the problem it was the earth for the fan on the crown Behind the fuse box!!! Why did vw run a cable from the fan all the way to the crown, when they could have just gone to the chassis next to the fan?

Re: Rad fan
Still not tested to see if its working as I can't get the van up to temp, don't think it's a warm enough day, just get the needle to just below half way but started annoying the neighbors idling over, so gave up!!!!!
