Pls help identify engine and turbo

Post by polish van ben »

Hi all

I started this thread over on Wanted section but have been advised to continue here.

Basically my turbo has seized and was after some info on how to get it reconditioned or a second hand one. Problem is I had a reconditioned engine fitted while in Poland and a few bits of info got lost in translation, eg exactly what type of engine it is!

originally it was a 1.6 TD, and I believe they were meant to fit a 1.9 TD - but after some help from Lloydy it now seems it might be a 1.9 TDI - all good. I remember they did tell me that I didnt have to wait for the coil to heat any more - would this correspond to a TDI? And they did fit a new gear box at the same time (4 speed instead of 5 speed).

Problem is that I think they used the old turbo from the 1.6 - would this be possibly? I definitely know that all the exhaust system remained the same as I had on the 1.6

Photos to come - any help would be fantastic

Ben

reason i thought tdi is the bigger injector in the middle and the bracket that holds the injectors in is the same as on my tdi. My aaz injectors were totally different

Will give Turbo a clean and have a look.

I'm I right in thinking I don't need any special tools to remove it?

Yep, turbo has a kkk on it, so I guess it must be from the old 1.6, just spent a good few hours trying to get it off, but got stuck on the star shaped nuts attaching it at the top.

Will have to pick up a better socket set for them tomorrow and see if they'll come off.

Oops, wrong again!![about the td/tdi bit] be carefull removing the bolts that hold the turbo to the exhaust manifold.

Hi David
How do you mean, do you mean it could be a TDI?

Other bolts came off fine, but ones holding it to manifold are solid and bloody tricky to get to, gonna pick up a proper socket set for it tomorrow. Currently just using spanners! I've heard hey are liable to sheers off though :-(

Holy Frankenmotor batman ! Looks like a bunch of bits and pieces..

It has a mech pump, with *no LDA*, but a turbo was fitted ? That 3rd injector and cam cover looks like TDI to me. In fact looking closely I think I can see a TDI injector clamp (not screw-in so TDI not TD).

If you're happy with the care and feeding of such a beast, then carry on and throw some money at some random fresh parts. If not, bin it and fit an AAZ or real TDI.

I thought tdi engines had lots of electronics on the injection pump.
But back to your problem, try putting the bolt under pressure and tap the top of the spanner/bolt[give it a shock].

Bolts are probably the JX 'triple square' ones eg. just a regular 12-point socket. Could be ba$stard tight though so breaker bar, heat etc. needed.

If they shear off you'll just have the snapped bit in the turbo, which is probably scrap anyway. New bolts are £13 each though last time I bought any..

Yes, TDI pumps ARE electronic. This engine is bits and bobs thrown together, block/injectors, pump, and turbo weren't designed to be used togther.

Frankenmotor! Nice.....

To be honest it's been a good runner, plus fairly economical and punchy up until the turbo packing in, so I think I'll give it a bit more time for now - plus don't have the money or time to get a whole new engine fitted!

Therefore are you telling me it might not be designed to have a turbo on it? They don't seem to have made any adaptations underneath - exhaust manifold leads direct to the turbo.

think the bolts are Jx type as my spanners fit them fine, just can't get to them....but will try giving them a tap too

So just to confirm are we saying this is a TDI? With a load of odds and sods fitted? And what is a LDA?
