Re: Help wanted please - no compression.
Ok so he replaced gaskets and piston rings. Our mechanic glanced over engine and it was all turning too fast.....and from this we were told no compression. None of the cylinders are firing up. Martin has gone through the haynes manual this evening and has redone the timing and nothing....we have a vw mechanic coming out in a couple of days and I am hoping it gets sorted as I am living with a bear with a sore head!!

Re: Help wanted please - no compression.
So the rockers came off..
I think then that something has not been replaced right.

Re: Help wanted please - no compression.
These are as simple an engine as you can get (ignore the flat 4 part) they have very basic requirements to run ...
Fuel (is it getting petrol to the carb ?)
Air (is the filter clean)
Spark (is there a spark at all 4 plugs)
Timing (even set at TDC the engine should try to start if not actually run but very rough)
Compression ?? If the valve timing is once set correctly this should only require setting up the once while warm ... contact plus 3/4 of a turn on each valve at TDC in turn.
As Steve Mocki said if this is wrong and all the other criteriors are correct it would give you the symptoms you describe BUT unless the rockers are wound right in (preventing the valves from seating) you would still register compression ... just at the wrong moment for the engine to run. Are the pushrods seated correctly ?
