Crankcase replacement CU

Post by 81AirCooled »

After managing to actually break the practically unbreakable CU crankcase (viewtopic.php?f=37&t=115205) I am weighing up my options. Hopefully someone will have some advice regarding feasability and possible costs.

Option 1 - cut our losses and sell for amount x- I'd hope for 1800-2K€ but it could be as low as €800 - 1200

Option 2 - hope for a second hand engine to come on the market at around the €300-400 mark. I've just seen one go for €750 on ebay which was basically turnable by hand but no other info at all so could be a dud

Option 3 - hope for a secnond hand van to come on the market cheap. There's one on ebay right now that is tempting. Substance wise it looks good and optically great but it's another homebrew and the engine is misfiring so my engine issue isn't immediately solved. Misfire could be a simple airleak and I've been there and done that. If moving my good carbs to another engine do the need rebalancing?

It's been standing for 12 months so god knows what other issues it's going to have, but could loot this van for parts as required then sell the rest.

Option 4 - buy a second hand case @ around €150-199 and move the parts from one case to the other. I can't do this myself - don't have the space, skill, tools or time. This seems the best option to me but I've no idea how long it would take and therefore the costs. I realise it's silly NOT doing a rebuild while it's apart but I simply cannot afford several k to do that and it will do little to add value to the van. So how feasible, sensible would this be, what absolutley must be replaced (seals) and would the carbs for example need to be rebalanced.
Also would any reasonable garage be able to complete the job? The closest Aircooled/van place is 60 odd mile away and he has already tried to rip me off.

Option 5 - buy and engine block without heads for around €500 and get garage to service and fit.

Thanks for any advice
