No Ignition Lights

Post by Campari89 »

Hello there. Great forum, it has been very useful up to now, thank you very much
However, Im rather stumped today. I was having intermittent starter problems, dead basically, so whipped off, clean contacts etc and it worked for a while, then same thing again. I have also just rebuilt the carburettor and it hasnt been started since. I removed the gearbox to body earth today, cleaned it up, replaced it and bolt sheared off (cracked and rusty) and I thought, aha, this is my problem. New bolt, reconnected everything and now I have no ignition lights (battery or oil light on dash) and no starting or turning. Hmm, voltmeter on it and there is power to the starter, 12.8 volts. All fuses in glovebox checked and fine. Are there any other fuses anywhere please? Any ideas on above? Cheers.

Cheers Ian, I have ordered a new ignition switch after further reading. Its just weird that the problem resolved after removing the starter motor, then re-occurred. Do you know if the ignition switch can cause the dash lights to stay off? Ive never seen this before. Its just weird they were working before starter motor removed, now theyre not.

Sorry I'm not an electrical genius, you'd need to speak to Mocki. All I know is that the ignition switch is a common source of random electrical faults.

Did someone mention my name?
So , just so I understand the problem, when you turn the key onto the first position nothing is powered up? No dash lights ( oil and alternator) ?
First check the battery is charged.
If yes, check both the pos and neg connections on the battery are good? Clean and tight ?
If yes , check the earth lead from the battery is making a good clean paint and rust free connection to the body
If yes, move onto the ignition switch itself.
If you have a meter , check for full battery voltage at the input to the switch .
If ok, easiest method is substitute switch for a known good one

Report back.....

Not saying this is your starting problem but there is some fuses that can be easliy missed above the others that sit horizontal(i think) pretty sure they are dash lights as well.adam

Hi Guys,

Yes Mocki, all of the above checked, there is power to the the switch, whether its going through the switch when I turn key is another matter. Ignition switch should arrive today. What stumped me was that when, what I thought was a starter problem occurred, the ignition lights were working prior to removal, but I guess as the ignition switch can cause intermittent issues, perhaps its not the starter after all. Electrical gremlins are the worst! :) Thank you, will report back.

Hi Adam, I have checked all the fuses in the glovebox and cant find anymore anywhere else, but being new to T25's, sometimes fuses are lurking in a dark corner somewhere else. Thanks :)

Update..... New ignition switch on, nothing. Just put the meter across the switch power input and it shows nothing today when earthed, if I put it across the switch input and the starter trigger output (at the ignition switch) it shows half a volt. Bizarre. I havent had time to think about or investigate this as Im busy, but if any clues Mocki, much appreciated :)

Ok, having got stuck into this again today and solved the mystery, someone had connected the battery to ignition feed cable to the wrong side of the leisure battery charge controller and therefore the van must have been starting off the leisure battery.......until it went flat! I only bought the van a couple of months ago and its been fine, but I had left it sit for a couple of weeks prior and leisure battery must've got below any signs of life. Anyway, I was baffled.
Thanks for your help guys!!!
