Hi all, my multivan front blower keeps blowing a fuse, i have replaced it with a larger fuse and it worked fine, but upon inspection the fuse casing had melted but the fuse did not blow and it still worked. i have removed the fuse for safety.
Any ideas what has caused this and how to fix it. ?
Thanks for the swift reply, whats involved? i'm sure i remember a fix where you drill a hole in the dash squirt some WD and it stops the resistance on the motor that might be blowing the fuses, anyone heard of this ?

If your fuse casing is looking as if it has started melting you it sounds like there is too much current flowing which is just what would happen when the fan starts to sieze. If you can get oil on it you can probably save the fan. Mine spins freely and quietly now it is oiled whereas at the beginning of winter it had siezed and would hardly turn by hand. Make sure you don't try running it as is on slow speeds as this might burn out the resistor ( guess how I know this!) That would be more of an expense and a bit of a faff as the proper ones are not available and the Brickwerks ones need soldering in.
Don't bother drilling the hole and trying to squirt lube in there. It won't help with the current draw for long. The motor has already put in a lifetime. It can un-seize a stuck motor and get it going but a tired motor is a tired motor and it will be a temporary bodge at best. Get a new one - its cheaper than having the motor or wiring catch fire - and believe me they can and do. I unseized mine that way but it'll still blow the fuse now and again.

I take it your TDI started life as a diesel so here is the diagram from the Bentley.
Mine was similar but I dont have the flap at the bottom sending air through the front crossmember via the door channels to the passenger compartment. May have a few pics somewhere too. Once I got the main dash panel off (rusty screws under windscreen) the heater box itself came out easily and was clipped together with about 15 clips so that bit pretty straightforward. Others not so lucky and have difficulty undoing the bolts holding the heater box in. I took the oportunity to cover the flaps with adhesive backed felt as the original stuff was disintegrating to the touch.
It escapes me why VW didn't provide a hatch on top of that unit to make blower motor removal much easier. I guess one could be made once the unit was out but perhaps VW didn't envisage the T3 having as big a following as those before
