Hello,
I don't know your engine that well but some have a relay which runs the aux pump with ignition off when still hot to dissipate heat around the block and cylinder head. It's possible this relay you're referring to is to run the aux pump. Good luck with the timing - if it's running then I would just be doing it by ear - but then I'm a bodger. As v-lux says - many choose to run slightly advanced so getting exact to the specs isn't completely necessary.

advanced the pump this morning... all good... starts spot on... turns out i'm quite a lucky man, left the diesel pump lock in and then started it, jumped the belt 1 tooth at the crank... retimed everything again, all good still, im a very very lucky man... thanks for all your help, had this problem for the whole time i've owned the bus and now i don't woop woop!!!!
