Clutch replacement time

Hi guys, time for your help again before I get the spanner out. I made the mistake of loaning out my van (friend in need) and it came back with a slipping clutch and that burnt smell! looking into things I seem to have a choice of 215mm or 228mm. Now my van is originally a 1.6d and is now a golf 1.9d (non turbo) inclined over to make it fit (badly).. Now, does clutch size go via the gearbox or engine. I know little about this stuff but am forced to learn due to finacial hardship. Can I, for example, take out the old friction plate and measure all the bits, diameter, splines, bore etc and order a new plate only off ebay for £6 or do i have to buy a kit for £LOADS!

In an aside... Do many people have this conversion?? I dont think its very attractive of practical, the inclined engine cant be good for longevity and I cant get to anything on the front of the engine! seems nuts to me

post some picks up , its about as common a conversion as they go , nothing wrong with it as long as it done using the correct bits , so pick from above and a couople under as best you can

228mm clutch was not fitted to the diesel

so unless you have some sort of modded flywheel you will have the 215 clutch


the diesel pressure plate is also different from the petrol one, , the bearing is the same and I am sure the center is the same as most of the 215 plates of the era

the engine setup is ok , you just have to remember that 60mph is best top speed and keep your right foot off the floor!

in fact if you still have the original 4 speed 1.6 gearbox its not best to go above 55 - but that's just my opinion

If this helps you then you know your stuff! It just looks like a hunk of metal from various angles to me

Oh and I only say 'badly' because the golf engine looks wrong on its side. I really wouldn't know if it was badly fitted.

Normal angle!
My first impressions:

Looks like golf dipstick kept - bet it hasn't been calibrated for the new installation.
Throttle cable outer fixing not altered - most probably contacts lid.
Fuel pipe unsecured. Likewise leak-off pipe. (Chafing risk)
Cambelt cover missing (unless you have taken it off for something)
'Poo' plate missing/cut away?

See now yours looks tidy! Yes dipstick is no use. Can anyone point me in a direction on how to recalibrate?
Yes throttle cable needs altering, previous owner decided a better idea was to cut a hole in the lid, go figure?

What on earth is a 'poo' plate?!

On the second of your photos - that bliddy great hole should be covered by a plate that is fixed to the rear of the engine.

I have to admit that my now dead CS has not had a poo plate for the last 5 years. But then it's only been used for about 100 miles.
I need to make sure to fit one when I sort out a 1Y in the next few weeks

sort of looks like the poo plate is there but hacked away ???
dipstick .well drain and refill the correct amount then mark on stick.

Thank you everyone, I've got a lot to do. and a lot to buy! looking forward to asking for a 'Poo plate' at halfords If I dont make too much of a mess of theis I'll post some pictures when I'm done. Thanks again for the advice

Halfrauds are Pooo but unfortunately they don't sell Poo shields, maybe they're emune.

Poo shield is a genuine part and clamped between gearbox and engine....Put a wanted add on here.
