Locking tailgate from inside

Post by airhead »

Is there a way to rig up a way of locking the tailgate of my camper van from inside? And also is there a way that they can be opened from inside?

I would not recommend that if you have a cushion over the engine cover, as it will be behind it when the door is closed. There have been threads on this before ( think there may be something in the wikki). I've just done mine using the inner rear door handle from a scrap range rover discovery fitted to the back door & panel & drilling a hole into the existing latch to attach a cable. You can work out a way to do it if you take off the inner panel & see how it operates.
I don't think there is any way of locking it from the inside if the key barrel is in the unlocked position.

How about fitting a central locking motor? That would allow you to lock and unlock it, although it would not allow physical opening.

Someone on here, prob as far back as 2006 did this with a recessed handle from an Austin Maestro. Been a while since I saw that thread. It looked rather good and did the job. Anything is possible I guess.

I did it using a method I read about on The Samba

It involved fitting two L shaped stiffening struts to the tailgate behind the card and fitted a cab door handle to them which was then attached to the spring latch on the tailgate lock via a bicycle brake cable. When I pull the latch the tailgate lock opens. I didn't fit the extra handle as show in the pic

So basically I have a cab door release handle on the tailgate door card

One day I will take some photos

Bit like a space pod opening it's door to the world (of other campers) on a nice day, feel the sun and breeze.

I had all my locks out recently, this is my tail gate lock. The long lever is welded on to the standard mech, with a hole in the inside panel to press it. Works fine, not as nice as Cruz 's though!
