Re: lost first gear
if 5 speed and you can get reverse drop the oil, chances are you will find needle bearings on the drain plug

Re: lost first gear
I have the same problem at the moment, used to be able to find first with a little fishing around but stopped using it as the gearing seems waaaay too low making it pointless to try and use it to pull away, so have been using second. Now I cant find first at all

Re: lost first gear
Disconnect the rear link bar at the cup and ball. Then you can select it at the gear box end by hand.

Re: lost first gear
I too have a 5 speed and never use first - takes you about 4 foot, if that. I now use second as its way easier on roundabouts.

Re: lost first gear
Maybe I will just continue to enjoy driving the old girl as is for a while, then when I have some spare time I will replace all the worn bushes in the gear linkages and see if that helps. I reckon for around £200 I could completely replace all the worn parts in the gear linkage system and fit a short shift kit from Brickwerks, though I have to say some of their parts are around 3x more expensive than those on fleabay. I understand the old adage buy cheap buy twice, but in this case does it really matter that much? Most of the worn parts are plastic / rubber bits anyway.
What say you?
cheers,
Rich

i guess , and i know how you feel .. but there are many kinds of plastic / different qualitys , also fitment etc ..
i guess re doing the gearlinkage is not a job you want to do very often .. also depends on how much you drive your camper as well ...

Re: lost first gear
I shopped around and did indeed make savings. I also replaced some of the concertina dust seals on the rod linkage with two brand new, cut up oil funnels from Wilkinsons.

Great idea can you take a picture next time you're under? Also, I think using an orange funnel would look 'proper bling'

Re: lost first gear
Just thought I Would update. Problem was all due to my home made engine mount for the AFN. It had broken and had dropped that side if the engine down. Causing the engine to rotate and effect gear linkage/gear change
Mount has come off now and re welded plus extra bracing. And now have first gear
