Weber carb on my 1.9DG

I know, i know, it shouldn't be there!

On a serious note, the last owner of the Doka replaced the original 1.6 diesel with a 1.9DG WBX lump which he then mated up to a Weber carb, after much neck craning and torch shining I was able to get the following information about the carb:

Further research yesterday evening leads me to believe that this carb was destined for an LT, is this correct? I got the information from here:

Is there anything I can do to improve the running, I realise to set up a Weber really well you need a rolling road and more experience than I have on this matter. The old girl is running rich as was confirmed by friends following me on Monday evening, getting to our destination they said it stinks! I'm guessing with my limited knowledge it's jetted up all wrong for my engine. I think I should be running a Pierberg 2E3 carb, is that right?

Is there anything I can do to make things better?

Anyone out there got a pierberg?

Sorry for all the questions but I would love to get my engine running better as I'm doing Gallons to the mile at the minute fuel wise and as much fun as it is i'm not sure how long my wallet will put up with it.

She's off the road for the moment as while poking and looking for info I noticed a couple of minute splits in one of the fuel lines to/from the fuel pump, I have new fuel line, clips and fuel line clamp all ready to go but the weather is rubbish and I'm not the tough northerner i used to be!

Would be grateful for any help/guidance.

Sympathies on the weber. I have yet to ever get one to run particularly well on a v-dub - even on Beetles. Each to their own, but personally I'd source the right one for that lump. These engines can drink fuel but its not made better with a weber. I've certainly binned several. It doesn't have a 009 dizzy too by any chance?

I will have to get back to you on that one, can't say i've checked but I would say there's a pretty good chance that there is.

The myth perpetuates. Even in the early 80s people were fitting these things. Don't get me wrong, the weber CAN improve performance but a lot of fettling is involved and fuel is so expensive now, I just don't think its a good replacement.

The 009 is still pushed as 'replacement' even by JK (why I have no idea) but it isn't, except where the whole engine has been built from the bottom up with performance in mind. The DG runs best on a stock dizzy. You can soon tell, if theres no vaccum unit on the dizzy, you can bet its a 009. The timing curve will be all wrong, coupled with a carb thats a devil to set up right. It will just drink fuel.

Hi there, I have a weber progressive twin choke carburettor to fit any type 4 engine , (so I understand !) , going spare after improvements to my engine, which I'm looking to sell. Not sure if it would be of any interest to you?

Looks like I am reasonably lucky, my dizzy is not an 009, seems to have a vacuum unit on the back, hadn't noticed it before, until I had a reason to check. So that should be one less thing to replace/worry about

as with any carb or injection system you have to really know what your doing when setting it up. spend £100ish and get it on a rolling rd and get the thing jetted correctly by some one that knows what there doing. the dtmr and the dtml are a twin choke carb giving a good balance of eco and power, but as with any thing the key is set up


have a read towards the bottom of the page on this thread hopefully it will give you a bit of encouragement with the webber.

Funnily I have been reading that thread already after searching high and low for useful info, found a rolling road tuning place in Northampton and may well be making a trip over there to get the old girl sorted out, from memory they are charging more the £100 to do the job though ! if it's a good job though I will recoup that in drive ability and better fuel economy though I guess!
