Fuel filler tube

Post by tforturton »

The garage man says I should think about replacing the fuel filler pipe, as it's corroded, and isn't going to last much longer. This is the bit at the top end, that you can see when you take the cap off. I can see that Brickwerks sell a stainless one for £75. Are plain old mild steel ones available? I'm a tight git at the best of times, but there seems little point buying a stainless one if the mild one will last another twenty years.

Best way to find out is give vw a ring and get them to check, if they say no. Try classic

NLA, AFAIK. I had to ask around when mine fell to bits. Petrol ones do seem to rot in time, the replacement was ex-derv and immaculate, despite being the same age.

Does that mean I can simply swap in a diesel pipe?
I take it that it's not possible to use the pipe from a 2WD vehicle? (that would be too easy....)

They are the same part for a syncro, regardless of fuel.

2wd has the filler in the front wheel arch, tank is under the middle of the van, completely different arrangement.

I've put an ad up in the 'Wanted' forum, but just in case anyone on here reads this, I'm now looking for one of these filler tubes... thanks.

Oddly enough I have a spare and it comes off the same van that Ian got his fuel filler from !! PM me if you still want it.
