Window Washer

Hello people

Im having trouble sorting my window washer...... It just wont work.

I have taken off the motor from the washer bottle and attached it directly to a battery and it works fine. I have replaced both stalks on the steering column as they were faulty any way and it still doesn't work. Has anyone got any ideas what it could be???

Ive have bought an electrical tester but dont really know how to use it.

check the earth from the pump is connected to the van body (continuity on the meter)
check you have 12v at the pump (DC voltage, set at 20 on the meter)

Thanks for the reply Kev. I've read some where on here that the earth is behind the dash? Are there several earths at the same place? And is it easy to get to?

it's easy enough.
just open the glovebox
there's load of earths there on the A pillar... on a castelated thing.
All brown wires going to it

reverend – this little diagnosis has been bugging me for years –
electrickery being my Haynes half a spanner skill level (and a a pretty rusty broken n chewed up spanner at that!) –

if you av the patience – step by step for a complete leccy novice – who would be more than grateful to crack this one –

1st bit - check the earth from the pump is connected to the van body (continuity on the meter)

set to continuity on the meter – yep - (mine makes a buzzer sound too) J

earths on our wundervans are always brown wires - yes?

Black probe on multimeter to earth wire/tab/fixing/ on pump - but where?

On the bolt? Remove bolt – attach to connector at the end of the wire?

Red wire on multimeter – errr… to…. Positive on battery?

Ignition on?

Washer pump being operated by helper?(if I had one!) -

Check that meter buzzes?

Reads a voltage?

2nd bit - ,check you have 12v at the pump (DC voltage, set at 20 on the meter)’

set meter to 20volts –

black probe on meter to a good earth on the van body? –

or on the negative post on the battery? –

red probe on multimeter to? –

end of wire/ connector going to washer pump?

Ignition on? –

Washer being operated? –

Should read 12v? -

Keep thinking – I should know this –but I dont!

to check continuity or a connection from the pump to the van body (earth)
place the red probe on a bare brown wire or terminal on the pump.
place the black probe on a good non rusty part of the van (anywhere nearby)

buzzer means you have a good earth
no buzzer means you have no earth

to check voltage at the pump (live)
set meter to DC voltage, set at 20v on the meter
switch pump on, connect red probe to a terminal or connector that is not got a brown wire, on the pump (green/black) or (grey/black intermittent)
place the black probe on a good part of the van body (anywhere nearby scratch the paint off if necessary

meter should read what the starter battery voltage is (around 12.6 volts or more)
no voltage means a dirty connection at the switch or pump
no voltage means a duff switch
no voltage means a duff supply to the switch
no voltage means a duff relay No.10... or connection to it

and thats when the fun starts

That's fantastic. I will give it a go. I'm slowly getting through my list of things to do and learning loads on the way. Maybe in a few years I might have a bit of know how. Thanks for your advice. This site is great

Thanks Kev for the step by step guide for non electrically minded people.

I also had a non working pump??? but by following this post, it is now back to working order

One more ticked off the list...........
