Expansion tank problem.

Post by TomDub85 »

OK after looking around the engine today for first time I noticed the pipe from expansion tank has came off its connected to the tank but after a good 20\30 mins looking around I can't work out what it connects to ? Also once the problem is fixed do I just fill it same as the normal tank ? Thanks tom

Assuming you mean the top-up tank inside the catflap, then the hose attaches to the spout of the dalek on the main tank, and keeps that topped-up automagically.

It connects to the cap on the other coolant reservoir. You fill it to the max line thats marked on the side

Took 30 secs to find sadly the connection leaving the main pipe has snapped leaving about 5mm to fix onto so I new tank it is . I take it its OK to drive without the expansion until I replace it ?

Connect it up as best you can until you replace it. It is important. Your cooling system is under pressure and the expansion tank is there to deal with that. If not connected your coolant will pour out and could be disastrous. A new small jubilee clip might help to hold it on until you can replace it, but personally I would not drive anywhere without the replacement part.

Once you cannot twist the hose that should tighten slightly more and then stop. Fill the top up tank 50/50 % water and antifreeze and order a new part from Brickwerks (if in stock) or another supplier straight away. Personally I would not drive anywhere without the replacement, but it's up to you.

Thanks trying to find part now van was first reg April 83 so need the 85 to 90 version fingers crossed

If the van is a 83 why are you trying to get the later tank?? Your picture shows the early tank. Brickwerks sell it.
As for driving it, that's down to you. But when the water expands it will come out the broken outlet and you will lose that water. I can't see how you can attach to that broken off stub?
