Annoying Leak! Please help

Post by 1_eyed_jim »

Evening, got a 1986 Hightop. Had a leak in the boot cupboard for the best part of this year and I've been cleaning up the small puddle it creates in the mornings and keep cursing at it to get it sorted. Now with the recent heavy rain its getting things damp inside the van and fear mould arrising! In the summer a removed all the old sealant from the roof and re-applied with Tigerseal. This did not sort it. Half way up the hightop roof is a gutter that I noticed a crack in and thought great I've found the leak! So I filled half of gutter with Tigerseal and this still didn't sort it! Now with winter here I'm thinking of taking it to a garage to sort but wondered if anyone had the same leak? The vehicle is parked horizontally on a culdasac hill so the vehicle is not only tilting back but also to the right. My thinking is its somewhere on the roof but i've been all over it! The water is dripping out of the seam on the picture below......

Hi
I've got a similar problem.
Did you ever get to the source of this leak?
I've just had my high top professionally removed and refitted so don't think water is coming from the gutter seals and running, yet it's still coming in.
I did change the tailgate seal for a JK replacement. Not sure it's the best fit but water seems to be running from about an inch back from the tailgate rubber.

Yes we got this leak sorted in the end. It was the seal in the hightop roof windows that were letting in water. Only the tinyest of streams but has been enough to go unoticed and has now done alot of damage before leaking out of the back. I'm going to have to take the roof off and do alot of welding but that can wait now until Autumn :P Good luck with yours hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for the info.
I'll check it out.

Know what you mean about damage.
Just had hi-top removed as had suspicion water was running from inside. Not much of the tin top left on either side.
Had all rust cut out & replaced, all re-sealed properly.
Water still running. Annoying.

Wow that must be really annoying. Just found out today it's still leaking on mine in the same place again!! Back to the drawing board. Thinking it must be the skylight now but cannot see any little streams. I might even cut a small square out where the leak is and have a look. Bit extreme though.

Could be leaking from around rubber grommet where the wiring comes from that feeds into tailgate.adam

Hi One-eyed-jim

Did you get your leak sorted out?

I returned my van to the garage that took the roof off to cut out the rust and they found a small area that hadn't been resealed properly.
We're now dry.

Might be worthwhile investigating this as we had very little metalwork left holding the hi-top on: just rust & sealant!

I had two annoying leak, one from a window seal which was fixed with black silicone. The other from the roof vent in the pop top. The second leak has not been as successful.... After many attempts to seal the vent, it just seems to get worse. Dripping onto my newly covered seats and thermal lined curtains :( tempted to rip the old vent out and put s new one in. Think gaffe tape and polythene for emergency repair.

Climbed onto the roof for a good look, vent lid appears to be a different one thats been botched on and is not water tight. Sealed up with white gaffer tape, until i can replace the whole unit.
