Fuel additives... Do they work and are they worth the money?

My question is as the title suggests...

Do fuel additives work? In my case I'm wondering If a bottle of diesel magic would improve the general running of my 250000km jx.

What does everyone think? Have you used something similar, did it work?

Its come up before this one. If you used all these additives with their wondrous claims, we'd be doing 100 to the gallon I reckon. Truth is, few if any work.

well not a designed one that does, two stroke oil works in fuel oil. you have to use a quality fuel, non of your nans left over chip pan scrapings or the "pooh" that supermarkets sell. 300ml of two stroke oil per tank full will have it have it purring like a happy cat (well almost ) it will take 2 or 3 tanks full, ive got a modern injector rail affair that was slightly rattlely but is now quieter than any van ive had . injector cleaner can be helpful in getting a Smokey diesel through an mot, by filling the fuel filter and running it through neat. if you google it you'll find that the merc tech boys did the research.

ive been having trouble with my 1700 diesel,so went to car spares and they have a deal on a bottle of redex and an oil additive for less than a tenner.my van wouldnt go over 40 mph but now after driving it to death last few days it,ll now do 55 mph and does seem to run better.so in this instance i would say a tenner well spent but have used these additives before with no results.

I've just put a reply on another diesel related question to this effect but I certainly do know that they work. They clean the Injectors etc and the most noticeable difference will be in mid range performance and acceleration (around town particularly in my experience) It's not just a VW thing, I've used it on Vauxhall's, Ford's etc. (sorry to swear)

Having said all that I see your camper has done a most impressive mileage, Mine has only done a measly 150,000. Assuming all else is well with your engine it won't cost all that much to try it out and see what you think.

I do like the idea of using 2 stroke oil as an additive but I think it works out more expensive does'nt it?

no its about £1.50/ tank full. two stroke increases mileage, cleans and lubricates and is the only additive that had any benefits when they where tested.

HMMM, Interesting I might give it a try in the future. I am certain that Diesel Magic works and that is about £10 but lasts for several months or a year I have found.

after putting redex and a redex oil additive in my 1700 diesel and driving it hard for a week it now drives quite smoothly still a bit smokey on start up but soon clears.Actually enjoy driving it now.

Hmmm may give the 2 stroke a try sounds interesting, does it make it smell like a moped though?

I had pondered using some of the stuff designed to clean and de-coke diesel engines when my DpF got clogged on my Alfa but my Dad always advised caution in using them as often cause the engine to run hotter (and not very smoothly) so they can cause damage if you get unlucky or have an existing weakness.
