Import Speedo to KPH

Post by javawolf »

Does anyone know where you can get a MPH speedo sticker from. I have a German van that I need to get registered (it passed the MOT but I have to take it to a DVLA centre for a inspection - anyone else needed to do this?). Anyway any advice would be good.

Theres normally somewone on ebay that seems to sell these regularly in a white finish. Can't find his listings today - may be a case of waiting a day or so until he/she relists them.

but I have to take it to a DVLA centre for a inspection

Are you sure? I have not heard of that? I just got my MOT and appeared at the local DVLA desk counter service and got it registered - £38. No extra inspection required...

A point to note is that a Kmh speedo is not a fail, mine has one and it passed the MOT fine.

Not that a 1.6d will be in danger of breaking many speed limits....

Pop into your local motorbike shop.. they will normally have mph numbers as a lot of "grey import" bikes have km speedo's

I didn't need any inspection, doesn't sound right.

As you have a left hand drive *imported* vehicle, as long as the Speedo works KPH is fine, same with the headlamps as they were designed for the LHD vehicle they can stay fitted masked off as long as they are within the spec on the MOT machine.

This is my second LHD van and have never had a problem, you soon get used to what KPH is in MPH, or you could just mark on the speedo with some couloured lines the MPH's that you need, mind you I think my speedo is probably reading about 10mph as I am getting so called restricted artic lorry's going past me when I am at an indicated 110kph.

DVLA do inspect a certain percentage of imported vehicles. Any vehicle can have an inspection requested (it says on the form), it just doesn't happen that often.

KPH ain't an MOT fail.

DVLA told me this was a new thing (last couple of months and ONLY for MOTORHOMES - it is for the big Amercian things according the this guy). If anyone else has not had this issue in the last couple of months let me know and I will query it with Swansea. My local office was Luton. The Van passed its MOT but I am worried that at the DVLA centre they will fail the inspection for KPH speedo.

Any advice would be VERY welcome!

Mine was UK registered at the end of May, having previously passed an MOT. It was inspected and approved in Bristol with a KPH speedo and masked headlamps, if it is of any help.

Hey javawolf don't worry. This shouldn't be a problem this is not a reason for failure and they shouldn't fail it if you end up taking the vehicle to DVLA. A pass is a pass. Mine passed last week with the KPH and headlights being lh. Having seen a copy of the MOT bible I know whats in there :)

All Done, The inspection was not very detailed. Just engine and chasis numbers (a bit tricky reading the chasis number with the underseal over it). The 'motorhome' part of the inspection was to find out if the table fixed to the floor, if the gas had a safety valve and if the bed was screwed to the bodywork. After ten mins was on my way. Hopefully I will get my reg number and tax disc in the post soon.
