Cab steps 'almost' goosed :(

Both cab steps are in a very sorry state. I have ignored them for about two years but now they are virtually goosed, however they should see out the summer as we rarely step on them.

The whole steps have rotted all over i.e the part where you put your feet is a mess, there are a few holes where the vertical sides meet the cab floor and the shaped section where it runs along the bottom of the cab door is rotten. It is beyond patching (they have been patched before)

Can anyone tell me the best source for replacements (pattern parts seem to be crap)?

Or would one need to be "made"

I'm not entirely confident the local bodyshop would be up to the job of making one though

I was under the impression JK/Heritage/Schofield repro's are a bit crap and a poor fit?

One of my steps is in a similar state and my searches havent uncovered any other than the ones you've listed. Finding someone who can do the welding is proving much harder though.

you cant buy them , ive seen the genuine vw part and its as bad as the repro stuff,,get your man to copy the full steps ive done , its not hard ,in fact theyre nice to do as far as some of the jobs go,
problem with the repair bits is you still have to join them to the vertical part assuming its still intact and they always look a dog.

I found the JK ones ok. Took a bit of fiddling and careful welding etc

neat enough welding and as good as its possible to get with pattern ones,
hows the van coming on, you getting much tiome on it again

metalmicky whats wrong with the genuine ones besides the water trap under rubber mat they were good enough when the van was built

the repair step that is genuine is identical to the repro ones, ask cruz to post up a picky , its not as case of being good enough for vw, its a repair part and they are crap. nothing to do with water under the step mat.
boat builder has done about the best job ive seen of fitting one but they are a compromise to rebuildiung the step from scratch .'as built'.

on the whole schofields parts are fine, batches come and go , but with regard to the steps, you either rebuild them correctly of fit a pattern step , they are all much of a muchness.

Problem is that most people probably don't have the skills or the patience to make the steps as per the original in two pieces (hence why I chose the repro part).
Quite a lot of curves etc going on there so I'd imagine it would be difficult if you had a badly rusted step, with rust going up the sides as well as the bottom.
