103 is glow plugs iirc.

However, whoever has been attacking your vans wiring could very well have spliced/soldered/scotchblock'd/welded/melted anything to the wires to/from it.

Looking at the state of the install I would suggest some where in your schedule of works you set aside time to go thr everything with a power probe etc and check all your earths and continuity on the tdi side of the wiring :ok

Only just woken up to this old thread, I read a couple of days ago it but sort of lost the plot..

As I understand it the van had an AFN initially, with a 'chipped' ECU, but the engine has now been replaced with a 1Z. Are we sure the present ECU is running the correct software for a 1Z, and the N75 has been changed for the correct 1Z one, and the plumbing changed correctly from VNT turbo style to wastegate turbo style ? Cos if not, there'll be problems surely ?

Think I'm the one loosing the plot over here  , syncro... lol
Van was working fine, perhaps not as good as it should, but at least it moved, after the 1Z was installed by a mechanic (no idea what he did, but it seemed to have done the job)... Until all this started to happen, wish it didn't... honestly!!

So whats the wastegate turbo style? Op op op op oppan wastegate style?

I just need to know what configuration it needs to be... Ewen pointed out a few things... So was going to follow those instructions.

Besides this, just got the part number for the relay plate from behind all the tangled wires, so will try and get a new one for this...
251 937 501 B - Hopefully it will not catch fire... :pimp
-----------------------------------------------------------
Elvis, wouldn't it be easier just to install a new loom... lol
Will try and figure out how to do that... thanks

This image looked good as it shows the measurements of the actual tubes and what seems to be the hole configuration.

Then this one looks good as it also shows the configuration of the vacuum lines, showing all the components I have.

Are these OK to follow :?:

The top one's for an ahu or 1z - wastegate turbo - what I've understood you have. The bottom one is for vnt - what I've understood you don't have.

Andy I didn't think this was originally an Afn - have I missed something? ECU number is for wastegate I think.

I'll have a look for a reliable 1Z diagram, not sure I trust either of those. The 2nd one is for VNT unless I'm mistaken.

Oh gawd, I'm regretting this already, I think I must have read another mental TDI thread in the last couple of days and got confused. I've just checked this one again and there's no mention of AFN is there.. I'll get me coat..

No ! It *was* this thread.

He says "So I got from a scrap yard a 1Z from a 96 golf and a mechanic installed it. Everything worked fine, driven miles on it.Drove it to UK and Been to the S. Spain and back twice on it and used it as my daily car and drove well for 3 years.

This engine was not as powerful as the previous one. I gathered later that it could have been an AFN from a passat. Later looking at the papers from the previous owner it had these letters written down on a piece of paper."

In an earlier post he says the garage said the ECU had been 'chipped'.

So my original questions all still stand.

apologies Andy - you're right - I hadn't read that post well enough. VCDS will tell you the software it thinks it's running - that would be useful to know.

Hi Andy, thanks for ur comments...

so you think that the software on the ECU is not compatible with this 1Z engine setup...? and that is why it is not functioning properly.

If so (and it's not that I am doubting you), how come it's been driving fine before. Have been using the van as it is for a few years now?

The ECU was sent to be checked to a specialist and they were the ones who found out it was chipped. I had no idea about this. Returned it as it was, as they could not check it because of this.

If The ECU is chipped, does that mean that the software running is the same as for an AFN, or would it differ a bit...

If this is the case, do I need to either change the ECU to one compatible to a 1Z, or can I change the software on this one?
If I do, is this going to change a lot? Was working fine (I gather) before...

You said it,,, Mental!!!

Hello,

on the tdi diagram it's J52 for the glow plug wiring at the top.

I'm afraid it's basically impossible to diagnose this from afar without looking at the van. I would answer Andy's questions as best you can - he is an expert at all this, but I've been working under the assumption that at some point this setup all worked fine. Unfortunately without knowing exactly how the ECU's been remapped it's pretty hard to tell what's going on.

For those who helped... big thanks !... You might alao want to know that it's the ecu causing all of this....

Would anyone know if I can use another Mk3 golf 1z ecu with a different part number than the one I have?
At the moment the part number is 028 906 021 B

I am looking for another ecu so if anyone here has one to spare pls let me know...
