A tale of woe leading from glow plugs to a ? dead engine ?

Post by keytouch »

So after having my van for about 5 years, I finally got round to changing my glow plugs.
The engine was rough and not burning properly and taking forever for the glow plug light to go out.
Having read up on here for the best way to do it all, I proceeded.
It was very fiddly but everything seemed to be going ok.
Upon putting one of the new glow plugs in, I noticed a crack open up that I can only presume had already been there.

Engine was difficult to start and is now making a put put put sound

I think I may have killed my engine. On the bright side, it is a woefully underpowered CS engine which I did intend to change at some point in the future anyway. This seems to have forced my hand a little.

A new head and all will be good, unless of course you want to upgrade?..

Well if I'm going to all the effort I may as well upgrade. Motorways at 35mph uphill are a little scary.

I suppose now I just need to do a hell of a lot of reading of the alternative engine forum to decide which route to take. So far i've mostly read about aaz but finding the right engine & jx exhaust manifold could be a challenge. Next I better read up about tdi conversions. And get saving up.

1Y is the normal route from a CS. Going TDI is big money, even if you do most of the spannering yoursefl

Well 1Y seems the most likely route I'll be taking. Better drag myself over to the alternative engine forum and wanted forums now.

Have you had a word with Simon at Brickwerks, he has a brand new JX cylinder head in his webshop
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/t ... td-jx.html,
I don't know if it would fit yours, but would be the cheapest solution until you can get the new engine of your dreams.

Thanks for your research efforts - yes I've seen that link.
Not looking to do engine of my dreams yet. Budget won't stretch.

Don't want to repair CS as its dangerously slow in hills and motorways.
Don't want anything fly by wire as too complicated and expensive.
AAZ too hard to locate bits on budget.
JX seems more complicated and expensive than I want as don't want to change exhaust and be messing with turbos.

As its my first engine change and only just learning about engines would like to stick with normally aspirated for my first go at this.vthis leaves me with 1.9D n/a so really looking at 1Y, 1X and AEF. 1X not as simple a swap. AEF are a weaker engine than 1Y and not quite such an easy swap.
This leaves me looking at a 1Y in all reality.

I want to do the span wrong myself as bought the can not only as a toy but also a hobby.

*This post may be best moved into alternative engine forum now as its gone down that route*
