DJ cold idle - revs not being raised

Post by AdrianC »

This is starting to get on my wick...

We did have hot idle speed issues - 1600rpm or so - but they were resolved by just adjusting the throttle positions switch so that it clicks on and off reliably. Now, the warm and hot idle is basically steady at 850rpm or so. Occasionally, it sits a little high, but a quick blip drops it again. With the ignition on, but the engine not running, the idle valve buzzes.

But... the cold idle doesn't raise the revs at all. If the temp's near or below freezing, forget it idling at all. It'll run, no problem, until your foot releases that last little bit of throttle movement, the TPS clicks - then it'll cut. If it's a bit borderline, the idle will dip down to as low as about 200rpm or so.

What am I missing here? It's got a new TempII sensor, decent fuel economy, starts fine, runs smoothly. '88 2.1DJ, probably around 190k miles.

Ah, so it's a duff idle valve after all, probably? Great. I'll give it a truckload of carb cleaner to see if it unsticks, but if anybody's got a spare... (There must be plenty of DJs that've been carb'd/LPG'd?)
