Fuel Gauge Stuck at 1/4

Post by stupot73 »

Hi,

I have just bought a new 2l / Aircooled / Petrol / 1982. I have not even seen her yet but I am already aware there is a problem where the fuel level gauge works until the fuel tank gets to about 1/4 full, and then the needle sticks. I beleive that refilling the tank and the needle moves back up properly. I've asked if the tank is rusty, and been advised not. Not getting her back home for another week or two but at this stage I wondered if there is an obvious cause / fix.

Thanks guys and gals.

My gauge has been stuck at 1/4 for the last 12 months, but that is because I run on LPG :rofl .

Joking aside, does the gauge drop to empty when the ignition is switched off? If not then the gauge is faulty.

Next test would be to remove the wire from the tank sender unit. Does it zero now? If it does, your sender is suspect. If not, then there is a short circuit somewhere on the wiring.

Hope this helps.
