Thank you for the tips on sorting the spring out. I now have the choke flap closed shut when cold and after ten mins of the engine running, its fully open. The problem is that when the flap is open the revs are still at abot 3000 !!. Ive slackened off the adjusting screw so much its almost out of the threads and it makes no difference what so ever . The throttle cable is not taught either.

What could be making the revs so high !?.

The adjusting screw will not do any thing if the fast idle is still engaged.
Reads like it too needs oiling as it might be seized.
Ill post some pictures up when I get home....or you can search in this forum for
High revs
Fast idle
Cold start

Did you blip the throttle when it was warm?

Pics would be excellent, thank you . I did blip the throttle and hoped that it would settle right down again, it didn't sadly.

As I look at the cam there are two springs wrapped around it. The spring on the right appears to have come adrift at one end and needs to be hooked onto something. Might this be the cause of the fast idle cocking up ?. Or, is it just another things that wrong but would have little or no impact ?.

Any how, I've used WD40's special penetrating and freeing lubricant on it and left to soak over night so hopefully anything that it sticking will become lubed and free, oooh, I say !

and bottom

here you can clearly see the stepped cam
the fast idle throttle stop is on the top most step, engines will idle at 2000 rpm when cold on this setting

Cheers Kev. So, could this spring being disengaged be the cause of my problems ?

yes..although I think you knew the answer to that

if you look carefully you can see the way they interact with the cam, the white side sorts the cam out and the black side sorts the choke

Well, once again may I extend a disgustingly large thank you to you all for the help and guidance. Reattaching the spring on the choke has cured the problem, and J now understand how the choke works on my van .
