rear driveshaft cv wear?

Post by tee3peeo »

Hi - looking at the wheel connection of the rear o/s driveshaft I noticed 'dampness' where the driveshaft connected. The other side was 'dry'. I disconnected the shaft - I can't find any splits or tears in the boot - should I just repack with grease or is this a sign of CV problems?
Any advice gratefully received.

D'you mean oil dampness?
That'll be the gearbox seal if it's around the flange area itself.
Has the drive-flange any play ( wobble)? Excessive?
Now check you gbox oil level, and all the transverse joint faces for signs of weeps.

NB. Don't expect new CVJs to last 25 years like the originals

thanks for reply Harry Mann and faggie
the damp area is at the junction with the o/s wheel, not at the gearbox. I wasn't having any problems with the CV - is it possible the dampness is brake fluid seeping through from the other side? Although the CVs are originals I don't want to renew unless I have to - my thrifty side won't allow it - would you advise changing them anyway - that would mean 4 new joints I guess...
cheers

I found an online diagram

http://www.jimellisvwparts.com/showAsse ... gory=21731

the dampness is where the driveshaft goes through the trailing arm roughly wher '30' meets '11'

thanks for all the comments though - I'll follow the video technique

Have you had
the brake drum off and had a look at the wheel cylinder?

I'd give a good clean off, then drive it a bit and you'll be able to see where its coming from then....
