Cone filter, Mmm... are we talking conical airfilter maybe...

Would a quick photo of the engine bay be worthwhile? Sticky fingers, messy pups, fiddly fiddly prev-owner?

As I mentioned earlier... Will it have the " cone" filter????

Sorry KP I don't know enough about air cooleds to comment .... my other comments were based on the tiny bit of hands-on experience I have had of them.

Clive I would imagine KP means the carb inlet filter seen on a Pierburg.

If the van has got twin Solexs there aren't any filters in the carbs. The only filter should be the in-line one just after the petrol tank.

Apparently it was going well and just stopped

If it spluttered to a halt it's probably a fuel problem. If it just stopped, like the ignition was switched off, it could be a problem with the connection between the Hall sensor and the plug on the side of the dizzie.
2ltr Aircooled CU with twin Solex's & originally a 009 dizzie, but now back to standard.

One other thing to check if it fires but won't idle, make sure the connections to the solenoids on the carbs are good. If the supply to either of the idle cut-offs isn't connected the van will stall at idle but run with the throttle pushed down a smidge.
