Went south this week end 23rd March had odd things happening with steering.
The van 2.1ltr petrol LHD DJ Syncro was heavily loaded so what happened...
Turning/manovering right the steering seemed to almost lock in a hard right ways pull needing some force to correct and force left.
Once centered the steering felt normal.
This happened occasionally then by Chirk on the way back from the south it happened several times in a few minutes and the last time there was a clunk from the right hand underside and it was ok again.
I have looked underneath for loose bolts, joints, worn rubbers around the rack and swivel area but nothing obvious. Its like the toe in ajustment went from straight ahead (normal) to toe out then back.
Most recent overhaul 1 month ago was the replacement of the lower arm with good second hand one incl lower bush and swivel, on the right hand side to replace corroded one. There was a knocking sound (like a clunking cvj) after this on breaking but it quickly cleared up, maybe the Moly grease working its way in?
Have you got any ideas if so can you let me know before I take it in for expensive repairs.
Could it be a shifting stabilizer bar . or diff-locks partially engaging?
The steering itself is sensitive and when driving directly ahead is sensitive as normal with no lag from worn trackrod end bushes it seems?
There also Seems to be quite a bit of vibration recently from underneath at high speed(65 plus)but dont think its balancing
Front CVJ's have done about 150,000-200,000KM
any ideas let me know

Could be the UJ on the steering. Mine too 'locks' occasionally

Re: wierd steering problems
Agreed. Can be an apparently intermittent fault, but if it locks up like that I'd stop driving the van and get it refurbed immediately. I've had this happen on other non-VW cars with manual steering. If it's breaking up the needle rollers in the steering u/jto the point that it can lock the PAS it must be really bad.
Stop and get it fixed!

Re: wierd steering problems
Does the van have power steering? If not then it isnt a UJ.
It could be a worn steering gear relay but I doubt it.
Id be looking at the VC. Drop the prop and go for a spin but jack up the front and steer form lock to lock and check there is nothing obviously visable first
