Re: Suggestions please.. Stalling..
Mark ... Solved problem yet.?....I am still having problems with my slow running....I had a mobile " engine tuner" come to have a look . Stuck his head in engine bay. First thing he asked for was work shop manual !. Sent him on his way.
I have turned the slow running up a bit to compensate, just as a stop gap. Fuel consumption up quite a bit, so it is to be booked in to a local garage that are rather good on VW. Unfortunately as I am continuing to attend Hospital at regular intervals I cant afford to be without van for some time.
I have checked Wiki and found a section on carbs. At one point it mentions about a filter in the inlet connection (on carb), blowed if I can find it on my unit..
Hope you have better results.

The cone filter is in the inlet petrol pipe on the carb,
Take the petrol pipe from the pump to the carb off the carb, and just inside of the brass connection on the carb (out of sight ) is the cone filter. You need a small telp tapping screw that will fit in the inlet pipe, screw it very gently into the end of the pipe and pull gently back once it has a bite, it will pull the filter out

It could also be the "run on" solenoid failing, this will cause the tickover problems if its either not getting power or not working when it does.... Apply +12vdc to the spade connection on the end of the solenoid and it should "click"

Re: Suggestions please.. Stalling..
I fitted a new in line fuel filter at tank (old one very dirty) and also removed and cleaned small cone filter in carb ( black and gunky) with Fairy Liquid (other washing up liquids are available).
Took air filter out, which was clean but notice one of the clips is missing leaving a 1/4" gap for air to enter. Will this affect it???
Unfortunately ran out if time so did not get a chance to take it for a run. I'll update once I run it for a bit.

Re: Suggestions please.. Stalling..
Air filter housing clips missing will possibly make mixture very slightly weaker if the air is getting in above the filter, but shouldn't cause too much problem other than making it noisier on hard acceration

Steve...Checked this out some time ago and it was clean, but blew it through just in case? Just checked it again, still perfectly clean.

Re: Suggestions please.. Stalling..
Hi all... Still troubled with this problem. Now getting worse.. Very difficult to start. Normally starts with first turn of key, now engine turns over several seconds before engine fires up. This started last week. Contacted the garage (booked in for May 3rd) that has looked after the van for several years for previous owner. He said the carb had given previous owner problems and a new carb was recommended some time ago ( Now £500 + labour). This sounds a bit odd to me as it was running well for several thousand miles until it first gave me problems a few Months ago (Jan)
Is there, in the club, a carb expert that is prepared to look at this for me and give a second opinion? Obviously not to far away. Or even to solve the problem for me. Naturally as a paying job.

I'd be really interested to hear how this turns out as I'm having very similar problems (viewtopic.php?f=37&t=109042).
If a new carb is what it takes to cure the problem, I'd be willing to invest - driving is not much fun (especially at night!) when you stall each time you come to a junction/traffic/cow in the road!

You didn't confirm whether you had checked the fuel overrun switch that Mocki pointed to. Have you checked it which is easy. You should hear it click open when somebody else just turns the ignition on (but not trying to start the engine). Alternatively, you could take the electrical wire off it, unscrew the switch from its housing and then connect the wire again. Hold it against the carb or engine to earth it and get somebody to switch the ignition on (but again, not trying to start the engine). The fuel cut off should disappear into the body of the unit. If it doesn't disappear then there is an electrical break in the connecting wire. Replace the wire and away you go.

I've heard very good reports about Bromyard VW for refurbishing your own Pierburg carb (cost just over £200), or you can have a fully reconditioned exchange unit from them for MUCH less than you've been quoted (under £300). Not had one done by them myself, but have spoken to the chap a few times and he's extremely helpful. Link to WEBSITE
