2.1water boxer mpg issues

after a recent drive across spain and dipping toe in portugal..
back in uk with my syncro doka.
2.1 petrol...have noticed lately that when starting the engine it idles quite slow..once warmed up the tick over is quite fast with the smell of running rich and the fuel consumption is quite bad ..actually that bad i can see the fuel guage running down :O
recent new plugs leads rotorarm dizzy cap ...renewed earth cables to block .
does drive well and acceleration is great..just fuel is omg
rust of course its got rust :)

One would have to consider the temp sensor II.

Or the air flow meter ?

It sounds like one way or the other it thinks it needs 'choke on' to enrich the mixture.
