Where to buy lock cylinders from..

Post by slowcoach »

Hi everyone-

im looking to buy new lock barrels for my cab doors, slider and tailgate. I cant find them on Brickwerks, gsf, eurocarparts, justkampers. I see them on Gunzl, but is there anywhere in the UK? the postage is pretty high. my handles are fine, just the locks themselves that i want new ones of.

also, get them all on the same key??

thanks in advance!!
john.

Well if nobody else can help at least you know Gunzl has them. The transport cost is the same up to a certain weight from them. What I do when ordering from them is check out what else I need and order those bits as well making the cost of transportation better value. Good luck with your search.

They use Paypal, which is so easy to use, once you have opened a Paypal account, which is easy and useful for all sorts of purchases.

Hi, the locks on my van (especially the slider) were exeptionally sloppey. I removed them and took them to a locksmith in Coventry. They rebuilt the tumblers to my key. As good as new for about £20 a lock. I'm sure a good locksmith in your own area should be able to do the same.

ace, thanks! didnt even know about that shop. new barrels all around then comes to £110. think i can then swap all the wafers around to match one key. i spoke to a lock smith this morning and it actually sounds like the amount of key wobble i get indicates knackered guides inside the barrel. still, gonna take one in to show him and see if it can be salvaged.

am i right in thinking that i can remove the lock barrels (one at a time!) and lock the door safely from the inside? i dont have a garage and dont want an unlocked van for any period :D

You have seen that sliding door barrels are different to cab doors??

Cab doors can be easily opened without the handles on. Even when locked as the lever is accessible

And VW still sell the little lock tumblers/segments but iirc they come in bags of 50

I have re-keyed new cab door handles and tailgate lock and I used as many of the tumblers from the new barrels as I could. I only needed about 1 or 2 of the old segments in each new barrel. You should be able to do them same :ok

There is a wiki article that gives you a good idea of what you need to do. It's easy peasy.

Brilliant Cruz - after further reading i now know what you mean about re using the new wafers / tumblers, and changing the order of them to match an existing key.

Doing slide door lock first since that's the worst.

Cheers!

hi cruz- ive had the slider and cab door handles off the van in prep for doing this job and learned a bit just doing that. Can you confirm what you say above, regarding the tailgate (push button lock) being the same barrel as the cab doors? I phoned custom and commercial to ask, and he said they dont make the barrel for the tailgate, and advised me to buy the whole tailgate assembly , which is over £50! :( pretty confident i can re-tumble the new barrels if i can get them.

thanks!

I can confirm that an early tailgate lock barrel is the same as a cab door handle barrel as I've taken them both apart and swapped barrels before. Can't comment on late tailgate locks as they are far shorter so I would assume the barrel in those are different

Actually I have just now dismantled the old tailgate lock (it's in my drawer at work as I never chucked it) and the barrel is exactly the same as the one sold by custom and commercial for the cab door handles.

http://www.customandcommercial.com/vw-t ... 0-91_4283/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Personally I changed the whole tailgate lock unit on mine (got luckily a NOS one for £25 on ebay) because the barrel housing on mine was very worn.

Early tailgate lock seal sold too http://www.customandcommercial.com/vw-t ... 0-85_4133/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

And a tip when removing the tailgate lock is to watch out for the spacer washer between the lock housing and the latch plate

And for the sliding door lock check Jed's informative picture to see where the spring goes back on when re-assembling https://club8090.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.p ... g#p7736354" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

iirc correct the legs of the spring protrude a bit but there is a slot down the barrel bore of the handle that one of the legs slides down then they both engage in a recess at the bottom of the bore. A little wiggling makes them seat correctly :ok
