Hello,

Yes you can.

There are only 2 types of starter motor fitted to Aircooled VW.s

Small type..short shaft.. fits beetles and bays..

Long type, long shaft (approx 20 mm longer) fits all later '80 on bellhousings.

Come in 2 ratings 0.7 kw and 0.9 kw.

Change the oilite bearing at the same time and make sure that your electrical connections are........SHINY !!

Cordialement,

So if the number on my old one is : 0 986 014 830 (I don't think this is the right number but it was the one my mechanic gave - it should be a 0 0001 number?? the CT is 0 001 211 221 according to brickyards site) and the one on the 1.9 petrol engine is : Bosch
0 001 211 253
12V
091 911 023B
according to brickyard this a DG engine code with a 58kw 78HP - the CT is a 37kw 50HP
I have now found out through cross referencing that my one is a DJ 2.1L petrol engine starter motor so the 1.9 should work OK?
Cheers
