I quite fancy something like this, as it can be used to heat a large kettle of water, without wasting all that expensive gas.

I had a spare half an hour and had a go at making a quick thrown together rocket stove to see how they work kind of prototype.

Two Stella cans, two coffee tins, a deodorant can and some sand.

I was quite impressed with how little fuel was required to produce a strong concentrated heat. It would have no problem with boiling a small pot of water pretty quickly.

I used aluminium beer cans for the inner sleeve, which after about 20 mins developed a hole and leaked sand into the burning chamber.

I will probably make something a little more substantial at some point, but I would never take this away in the camper with me. I would rather make a Dakota Fire Hole if needed.

What's the purpose of the sand in the top tin?

Its to insulate the chimney making it hotter so you get more draw and it pulls the flames up so it burns gasses to make it cleaner burning, but ninja's has a yellow flame so it would blacken anything on top

Also I suppose it will make it easier to move if needed and won't scorch any grass

The pic of mine with the large flame was taken just after I lit it. The flame died down after a minute two as did the smoke. I pretty sure all of them will blacken the pan to some extent.

Have you tried yours yet?
