Am i missing something?? gear selection problems

Iv been having a few problems selecting first and second gear....... under a quick inspection(in the dark) i noticed something abit suspect, where the gearstick comes through the floorpan and is visable from underneath, theres a joint that is contained in a four sided box,now im sure on the night of inspection there was some kind of guide that looked like it should have sat in the rails on each side of that box thingy, a friend advised it probably best to take a look the next day, so i knocked it on the head, anyways next day i removed the spare wheel, and had a look, but it seemed to look like the bit i thought should have sat in the o/s guide, in like the lip that goes the full length of the poo shield, had dissapeared!! now i dont know what should be there, and on the joint on the bottom of gearstick it looks like there is guides, but they are nowhere near the seats either side???? i dont know if that sounds like a load of rubbish, but i think im missing something!!
ifg anyone could point me in the right direction of what should be there?? if anything, i would be most gratefull!!!!!
