Now i have my 2 litre Aircooled running like new i was wondering what gear i should be in whilst driving round town 30 mph or so, i heard somewhere that they are best wuth engine running fast i.e in 3rd gear. Is this true, i also heard that you can stay in 3rd till 50 mph. My speedo is an after market "pooh" thing thats white and doesnt have the markers for when to change gear. If i was to get an original how easy or hard are they to fit. I did one in an escort in my youth and knackered up the needle, it span round everywhere.

Re: what gear
I wouldn't think it would be too hard to find a speedo head too do a complete change , might not be cheap though now days as the greed element has broken out . Changing the face will be cheaper but tricky , specially if some muppet has already been there.
The answer to what gear question is really a matter of personal opinion..... If its really hot it's better to keep the revs up when in standing. Or slow traffic as the fan on the alternator is the only thing moving the air around your engine, low revs will mean less air flow but if its normal uk weather, low revs will be better IMO
