Why 15" wheels?

Post by cleagarr »

Hi

Apologies in advance for the dullard questions - I have already put the dunce cap on...

I'm about to change the tyres and my understanding is that my syncro originally came with 14" wheels...

1. Why would they be replaced with 15" wheels?

My plans this year involve two long runs to France (Approx 4-5000 miles in total), daily commute (9 miles there and back) and weekend jaunts (usually to the Welsh coast - 50 miles or so). There will be no hard core off-roading. So....

2. Why should I not go back to 14" rims?

3. If I keep the 15" rims what size road tyres should I put on them? Likewise 14" rims?

Really grateful for any thoughts. Also aware that I ask a lot of questions and provide very few solutions - sorry!
All I ask is for the chance to prove that money won't make me happy.

Main reason is off road tyres can only really be got in 15"

Yep... like lloyd says really. Personally if I could get a decent 14" tyre that could give me the same rolling radius I have now I would have gone for it rather than a thinner tyre on a 15" or *shudder* 16" rim on a 14" Syncro, and run the risk of donking a rim....

I am no expert though and I hope this helps :ok

15" rims give you a much better choice of tyres to fit - both off road and on road - that and better gearing. If you only want to use the van on road then stick with 14" rims and fit 185R14 or 195R14 van tyres and if you have 6" wide rims you could go for 205 tyres. Off road, all terrain and winter tyres are all available in 14" but not that easy to get. Like the others have said, 15" = bigger choice

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated.

I'm going to go for the 14s. Is it worth selling my set of 15s? Will they be worth anything? Four of them have 215/75/R15 BF Goodridge ATs (not much tread left) and one has a 195/70/R15 (never used) as a very short-term use spare - I put this on as it means I can get it in the spare wheel carrier (long story!).

Only ever put same size/make tyres on your syncro.
I read post as keep a odd sized wheel/tyre as a spare, do not.

Worn tyres aren't worth anything but rims (depending which ones) may be worth something.
