Heat Exchanger Help Needed

Hi I am new to the forum and looking for a bit of help with my 1980 T25 Aircooled 1600.

Is it normal for smoke to come out of the heat exchanger pipe where it connects to the crossover pipe, when you take the crossover pipe off? As I haven't got a clue about Aircooled engines.
