How on earth did that happen

On a 1600 (the only one I know) it basically only has 4 wires, obviously an earth (you can identify that one with your multimeter because it is comoned with the metal case ;)) Then there is the main (red) 12V feed wire, then an orange wire for the ignition circuit, then there is one (purple if I recall correctly) that only supplies the fan. During the cool down cycle this purple (I think) wire is supposed to stay live after the burner has gone out, just for a minute or 2, to cool the insides down. Although mine has recently had a full service, mine never seems to do the "cool down cycle" thing :?

So, connect the earth to an earth ;)
Connect one of the remaining 2 wires to a good 12 volt source (via a 5 amp fuse ;)) and see what happens. If it all bursts into life you have found the "main" 12 Volt feed, if only the fan comes on you have found the cool down cycle wire (so the other wire must be the main one ;))

Now the thermostat. you need to give us as much info as you can for me (us) to proceed, but it ain't hard. It will have an earth and a 12 volt feed. It will then have 3 wires coming away, matching the 3 wires you just identified above, but not necessarily matching colours. Your multimeter is your friend here, identifying what is earth and which comes live when the thermostat is used.

Some info and wiring stuff here (on the Propex website) CLICK HERE

Let us know how you get on.

Oh and,

Hello, my name is John and I am from South Cheshire, I drive 2 T25's, both on LPG, a tin-top we have owned for 10+ years and a LeisureDrive Hi-Top we have had for just over a year. We do lots of shows and rallies, not just VW related but steam rallies, airshows, motor racing etc.

(An example of an introduction when arriving new to a forum ;) )

Another lil tip = put your name, location, and what you drive (including engine type) in your sig, it will save time and will help when asking questions. Plus we just "like to know"
