Heater blower failure

Post by blankville »

Hi everyone, I've only posted on here a couple of times so go easy on me please lol! We have a 1983 Devon 1.9 automatic and all of a sudden the heater / blower stopped working, the van also has a blower in the rear under the rock and roll bed- this also has stopped working. Both are controlled by separate switches on the dash. I've had a long look through the web looking for a solution however I've not seen any posts relating to both heaters packing in at once. I'm hoping its a connection or an earth problem maybe?

I was wondering if anyone knew if the two are connected ? I've checked the relevant fuse as per Haynes and its fine, I'm dreading the thought of having a seized blower and having to take the dash out and replace it.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated - if I've missed any important info out- let me know please..bare in mind I'm a bit of a novice.

Thanks

B

Do you have a multi meter that you can use to establish that you are getting power as far as the fuse? Sounds more like a supply problem rather than a buggered motor , with them both packing up.

I don't have one, but I can borrow one from a mate. Thanks for the reply, I was thinking the same with both deciding not to work at the same time.

If both have failed mechanically at the same time you are incredibly unlucky. Don't go to toilet!
I would say you either have a bad fuse connection or a wiring fault. However I seem to think that both heater blowers do not share a fuse. Certainly on the later vans they are on separate fuses 12 and 13

I would introduce power to each motor independently to check the motor is working I think

Mostly the first step is to try a different switch when the main heater fan stops working

I recently traced my non functioning heater blower to a dodgy switch on the dash, they are easy to remove and disassemble, I stripped mine down and cleaned the contacts inside and my blower works fine now. I would follow Mocki's advice and check the switch first.

When I removed my switch I found that if I applied a little pressure to the control knob whilst the wires were still connected (Squeezed the whole switch together, front to back not on the sides) The blower began to spin, that is why I stripped the switch down and cleaned it. There was black oxidization on the contacts and a little gunk in the switch. Probably from using Mr Sheen furniture polish to clean the dashboard!!

Good luck.

Hi, thanks alot for the replies folks, I should have my multi metre very soon and will test the fuse and the relay. Also gonna have a further inspection of the earths-I'll have a look at the switches too now, thanks very much for the advice.
I know I'm unlucky but the two at the same time?? Surely it's the supply?.....please be the supply
