Water pump

Post by Steve T »

Hi all
What is "acceptable play" on a water pump / pulley in your opinions? I seem to have a bit of play on my water pump, small in and out bit more of side to side, no leaks, no loss of water, pumping round, no overheating, alternator / pump belt correct tension (regularly checked) i did notice what i thought may be a drip from it when checking round at the weekend, 40 mile trip with a sense of dred and ready to stop at any small sign of anything, but checked after and no drips.
is it a if in doubt change it?

thanks in advance

Is it noisey? If its quiet and behaving I'd stick with it but have a spare in the locker ready!

Infact that what I am doing right now.... I know I have to change mine it's noisey but not leaking and it has no play but its gonna give up soon.... S the new one is riding about with me till I can get the chance to change it over

There should be no play in the bearing ('gland') It will fail sooner or later but 40 miles should be fine - fingers crossed - keep the AA card handy though

take the belt off and turn the pump, just replaced mine, almost no play and wasn't noisy but when turned with the belt off it was rough and obviously about to go.

Even with a spare you wouldn't really want to change it at the side of the road.

The late 1.9/2.1 WBX pump from Brickwerks comes with the O-rings and gaskets in the box ready. (and also both the spigot for a 1.9i/2.1i and the plug for the 1.9 carb variety)

The GSF pump is also fine, it's a VAG part with the logo engraved out ... I can't remember whether that comes with the seals/gaskets though.
