gearbox should I be suspicious

Post by h2865 »

Hi folks,
This could take a while so please bear with me your thoughts will be appreciated.
I have a 1.9 Caravelle with the auto box which is or was a runner. The engine is good but the gearbox took an age to select reverse. I decided to take both the engine and gearbox out to tidy them up and whilst it was out I decided to take the box to a local auto trans workshop to have them examine it.

After some 2 or 3 weeks they contacted to say the gearbox was goosed and it was full of debris. They further said that they had to inspect it from underneath because the inspection thingy was seized. Finally I went to pay them their £35 for the trouble of inspecting it. They said it would cost in the region of £300-£350 to sort it or they could get rid of the box for me whilst I sourced another.

Nah I said paid my money and left with the box. Its been in my garage some 3 months now whilst I pondered the best course of action. Anyhow curiosity got the better of me and I decided to have a peek and this is where my suspicions began:

The belly pan has 10 13mm bolts, 8 came out easily the other 2 had to be heated up and then a small chisel and hammer to get it to turn it which seems very odd if it had been inspected. Once the belly pan had been removed it was full not of debris but oil. This again is very odd, my immediate thoughts were if your inspecting the interior you would get shut of the oil. Am I being too suspicious your honest opinions is requested.

It's all behind the pan at the front of the gearbox where the dipstick goes in.

i have just taken in a 1987 caravelle 1.9 auto for breaking. it came with engine and box out. the box has been reconditioned by an auto gearbox specialist here in cardiff. it was a cash job within the trade so i do not have a receipt. my intention is to list the vehicle on here next week. if you are interested in the box then message me. gareth
