1.6TD Engine non starter

Post by tommin »

Hi all, am back after a brief spell away. I sold my old van (bog standard 1.6D) got me an 89 1.6TD drives great and quicker, or it did

This morning went to take her out but she failed to start??

Turned the key waited the glow plugs, it went to turn over then just got nothing but the starter wurring some. Tried for hours after recharging battery, but kept getting the same, would try to turn over but failed only the starter going nutty scuz the pun, am rather cheesed at the mo

No problem with battery, did a full recharge and used the booster also, but alas

Any ideas, i have back tracked the forum but could not find this sort of issue.

Failed starter motor?

Corroded starter motor solenoid connector? Frayed battery cable? Poor condition earth braid?

I'd check for corroded connections first.

Good luck,

Yeah I thought so, I have to start back at basics on this one then. Hope it's not a failed starter motor though

I just wanted to check that maybe something else someone may have come across could shed some light on it.

Thanks Ringo
Regards
Tom

I had a similar thing a few years ago. The starter went round OK, tried to engage the engine, but would immediately kick out and just spin.

It was the one way clutch in the bendix. I bought a new bendix, but in the meantime I took the old one off, gave it a good wash out with diesel, then when it was dry, oiled it a bit and put it back. It has been fine ever since, but recently on cold mornings has been kicking out occasionally, so I might have to do it again. Your nearest starter motor and alternator repair specialist can replace the bendix if you don't want to try the repair yourself. It can be a bit of a s0d getting the circlip off!

Hope this helps.

I know what you mean, it took best part of an hour to get off. I cleaned and tested it out, seems to spin okay, but i do believe the clutch drive is slipping to much, on top of that the one lug broke whilst attempting to loosen for cleaning (managed a temp fix with a spot weld). I will purchase a new one soon.

I then checked the earth straps, and yep the gearbox one was badly corroded, so much so that the bolt snapped whilst trying to remove it Now there is only one bolt holding the gearbox bush plate on, guess will have to drill out and re-bolt that one.

Then I noticed one bolt loose, transmission to sump, went to tighten that and "crack". The geezer who sold us the van failed to mention he had gunked up a crack in the sump Luckily i found a replacement sump which is on it's way as i print ordered new gasket same time

5 speed gearbox lever bushes at bottom need replacing, so ordered them to day

Been one of those days today, though better things go here at home than up north in Lapland with nearest garage nowhere available lol!

Never a dull moment
