Speedo Problem

Post by randiandipandi »

Hi,

I've checked the photo on the wiki and my n/s/f wheel appears to be missing the end bit of the speedo cable (which would explain why the speedo isn't working!)

Image
photo (4) by Larfinn, on Flickr

Although I might not be right (as I have no mechanical knowledge)!

a. - am I right and there is a part missing (or do I need to do something else to expose the speedo part?)
b. - where can I get the part(s) I'm missing (I can only see the cable itself on BWerks)
c. - is it safe to drive? (I can use sat nav for speed until fixed.)

Sorry to ask "newbie" questions but I have tried to find the answers first honest!!!

First thing is to take the grease cap off, it's most likely that the retaining circlip is missing and the cable end is just not through the cap , but hiding inside !

There should be a small C clip that just prevents the 'square section' speedo end from moving. However, looking at the picture I suspect that the cable end has worn the cap hole round (should be square to match the cable).

The cap needs removing (knocks off) and the speedo end and square hole in the cap need checking to see if they are too badly worn....and then once you know what parts are worn, you know what needs fixing.

Yes..perfectly safe to drive.

Now I read that as that picture is off the wiki not the actual van in question, did I miss read it? .

If you do have a non square hole, you can either weld and the file the hole square again, or use the cap off the other side and make a square hole in it

Sorry I did misread it .

We have in the past used a small piece of "twisting wire" in the hole in the end of the cable and a washer to keep the cable through the hole on the absence of a circlip

I can't see the end of the speedo cable (haven't gone searching yet - came straight in to pop the photo on) - The actual speedo cable should be easy enough to identify as it comes from the dash down to the wheel? - if so I just follow it and see what is at the end of it?

Is that not the end of it in the picture? Is that your van in the picture?

Sorry Steve, you are dealing with a muppet (assume no knowledge!!!)
Yes this is my van.
The square bit sticking through the middle is the end of the speedo cable?
The hole in the cap looks square so am I just missing a clip or something?

Sorry Martin - if I had read your post properly I would have known that!

So I need to put the cap back on and fit a washer and clip (or something else in the short term?) ?

Yep! The square end of the cable pokes through the cap and is help in place with a circlip in the groove , however iirc there is also a hole through the end of the cable ( or drill a 2mm hole through it ) and use a "r" clip or twist of wire and a washer to stop it going back into the grease cap

Does the clip need to be secured (ie so it doesn't spin (the photo on the wiki looks like it is) or is the clip purely to pull the cable far enough through the cap?

It all becomes clearer.....

Yes you are just missing the C clip that fits on the outside close to the cap, in a 'groove' in the cable end.

It could be that the cable (minus it's C clip) isn't far enough through the cap hole to drive properly)

However.... whilst you have the cap off and speedo cable end exposed, it might be worth taking off the clock/binnacle surround (pull upwards from the back of the housing)
If a late type then reach behind the speedo and pinch together the white push on connector to withdraw the cable from the speedo head.....you can now get someone to turn the cable end and see if it turns at the speedo.

Cables can twist and break.

If the hole is square and the cable end is square it won't spin

Yes..Steve is right...just re-fit and make sure the cable is pulled fully through the cap.

In the absence of a proper C clip you can use a piece of single core copper wire (like the type in 1.5mm twin/earth domestic house wiring)...use a short length, wrap around the cable end in the groove and twist to secure and trim.
Hopefully that will have fixed it..otherwise check as I mentioned earlier.
